MyJongg

MyJongg is a free and fun take on the classic solitaire game Mahjong.

Mahjong is a solitaire game that uses titles rather than playing cards. The standard game features 77 unique tiles and 144 tiles overall. Tiles are laid out in various traditional patterns, and these layouts all require that there are some tiles that are inaccessible because other tiles are stacked on top of them. If you can make a match between accessible tiles, then those tiles can be removed from the board, and the goal of the game is to remove all of the tiles from the board.

MyJongg is a freeware version of this classic solitaire game. It provides all of the elements required for a traditional mahjong experience. It also provides players many options to personalize that experience, and that is where the name of the software comes from.

MyJongg provides a number of tile sets from which to choose. The default set is fairly faithful representation of classic mahjong tiles, including the bamboo sticks, dots, cracks, the four winds, the dragons, the flowers, the seasons and so forth. There are popular alternatives to the classic set, such as one that has cats rather than dragons, and MyJongg provides some of these as well.

You can also create your own tile set. The program lets you pick from various colors and textures. You can even provide your own images. These custom tile sets do not look quite as polished as the traditional sets, but they can be a lot of fun regardless especially for children.

MyJongg supports the traditional mahjong layout, which is often called the Turtle or the Dragon. It also supports the various schools of layout design. This includes winnable, random and seeded. This allows the game to generate layouts based on your preferences, which helps keep the game fresh.

Custom layouts are not yet possible. The developer has said that a layout editor has been made for the purposes of creating the program and will be released as a feature for users. However, at the time we reviewed the program, that feature had not yet been implemented.

The program is very user-friendly. The board takes up much of the screen. A left-sided menu gives you access to New Game, Select Game, Tiles Left, Layout, Tileset, High Scores and Options. At the bottom of that panel is Tiles, Time and Game. Tiles provides a tiles remaining count. Time indicates how long this particular game has been played, and Game indicates the seed number in case you want to recreate it.

MyJongg has been in beta a very long time. At this point, it may never get a full release. It is stable and plays well, but that also means that the layout editor may never come. Additionally, the high scores feature is not fully functional, and that may never get fixed as well.
